Everyday wisdom

Patience in changing times

Sabr as engaged presence rather than emotional distance.

Everything moves

Pleasant and painful experiences both change. Sabr, or patient perseverance, begins by noticing this movement. A feeling can be real without being final, and a difficult hour is not the whole of a life.

Patience does not mean numbness

A patient person can feel grief, delight, anger, and affection. The difference is that emotion becomes something to notice rather than something that must immediately command action. This creates room for compassion, prayer, and better judgment.

A practice for today

When a recurring irritation appears, take three unhurried breaths before responding. Notice the feeling, the story your mind adds, and the action you are tempted to take. Now it can be a choice rather than a reflex.
