Everyday wisdom

Sincere action and trust

Working fully while loosening our grip on outcomes.

The tension between effort and control

We often treat effort and outcome as if they were the same thing. Islamic teachings invite a different balance: take responsibility for your intention and effort, then place what you cannot control in God’s care.

Trust does not mean abandoning effort. It means working with integrity while remembering that outcomes are not the measure of your worth.

A practice for today

Before an important task, divide a page into two columns: ‘mine to do’ and ‘not mine to control.’ Put preparation, honesty, patience, and asking for help in the first column. Put other people’s reactions, perfect timing, and guaranteed success in the second.
